Louise Michael

Matron, 16 years with the Trust.

I've got a senior role but I can work flexible hours, and I really value the freedom that gives me. It means I can do a good job and have a family life as well.

This is a one-person job with cross-site responsibility, but I can still work from home some of the time. Which is great, because I can deal with all my paperwork there, and focus on the clinical side when I'm at the hospital. Pretty handy, really.

I live outside London so I commute in with my young son and leave him at the Barts nursery. The facilities are all in place to make it easy for me to work the way I want. And as long as I achieve my work, no-one's breathing down my neck about how I do it. For me, it's all about independence.

Yes, I've been here for ages, but I've always had plenty of movement and variety, and that's why I've stayed. Also, I really like the atmosphere, it's very warm and friendly. The fact that I'm still here after sixteen years speaks for itself, really.

Q+A

How easy is it to park at the hospitals?
Unfortunately, our hospitals don't have car parks, but there are such good transport links that bus or tube travel is really the best option, even for die-hard petrol-heads!
Are the hospitals close to any tube stations?
Yes, our hospitals are in the city and east London and so benefit from London's extensive public transport. Barts is in the City and is near St Paul's, Barbican and Farringdon tube stations. The Royal London is in Whitechapel and is just across the road from Whitechapel tube station and The London Chest is a 5 minute walk from Bethnal Green tube station. We're also close to overland train stations and plenty of bus stops, so it's easy to get here!
