Nathalie Avila

Sister in Paediatrics. Trained at the Trust.

I was a student here, and I had a brilliant mentor, and I decided to stay on. Which was definitely the right choice, because you can really develop your career here.

Teaching and learning is a big part of what happens at Barts and the London. They give you great support to go on courses. There's a level of commitment I don't think you find in other hospitals.

Basically, you can move on without having to move away.

So you get the best of both worlds - change and development, but also the long term relationships that you only get by staying on in one place. I love seeing toddlers coming in now that I first met as tiny babies. I'm part of their childhood.

And we've got an artist in residence working with young patients and kids in the community on the interior design of the new hospital. Things like that make a big difference and help to create the friendly working atmosphere. It's unique, I think.

Q+A

What opportunities are there for further education at the Trust?
We work very closely with City University (the St Bartholomew School of Nursing) and you'll have access to specially designed courses that range from study days to Masters degrees and beyond.

We also run the RCN leadership programme in house - which means you work with friends and colleagues, so you all learn together with plenty of opportunities to network. Our in house Learning and Development Team also run study days and courses. There's a real sense of team spirit working this way, so you don't feel isolated in purely academic studies.

Our whole approach is about developing every aspect of your potential, and that means managerial and personal skills, as well as clinical competencies. Helping you develop your career is a real priority, and you'll be able to improve your skills, move ahead, and fulfil an increasingly important role in the whole patient experience. Your satisfaction is a vital part of patient welfare.
Will the hospital give me free uniforms? If so, how many?
Full-time staff are supplied with uniforms including 5 dresses, or 4 tunics with 3 pairs of trousers. Or you can have 2 of each type, for a mixture.
