Mandy Murphy

Assistant Matron in Medical Cardiology. With the Trust 6 years.

I've always been in cardiology; I've moved from a junior staff nurse all the way up, and I've never had to look outside the Trust for the next promotion. Barts and The London Heart Centre is big, and it's one of the best ones too.

There's always been the opportunity for movement. For some people, that means moving on to different jobs, and for others, like me, it's about moving up in the same job. But either way, you don't necessarily have to wait for a vacancy, because new posts, and new roles, are actually being created all the time.

Right now I've got just the right balance in my work: I manage about thirty-five staff, but I also do clinical work. For me that's the ideal mix between being a manager with responsibility for all those people, and hands-on clinical practice which keeps me in touch with the patient care side of the work.

And I've got a good balance between work and personal life, as well, because I've got a baby, so I work part-time. Everybody wins: I get to look after my child, and they get to retain someone like me, with all the experience I can offer.

Q+A

I've got an 18-month old daughter. I can only come back to work if I can get help with childcare, like financial support. What can the Trust offer?
Firstly, we have some great arrangements with local nurseries, which offer good value for money and extended opening hours to suit our shift patterns. We also offer childcare vouchers, which let you select the type of childcare that's going to work best for you financially and can save you up to 1000 pounds a year on childcare. It's just one of the many initiatives with which the hospitals are improving working life for the staff and helping you to balance work with caring responsibilities. Flexibility is the key, and you have the choice.

There's a dedicated work-life balance team who can answer any questions you may have. You can call them on 020 7480 4331.
I live outside London; I can save money with a yearly travel pass but can't afford the whole price upfront. Can the Trust help?
Yes, you can get an interest free season ticket loan, which is repaid from your monthly salary.
