Helen Kelly

Came in 1997 to work in neurology. Now a midwife after training opportunity.

I love what I do. I still develop a special bond with each new mother I care for, even though we're one of the biggest, busiest maternity centres in London.

Last year we delivered over 4,000 babies, and working here has given me real confidence. I enjoy that sense of competence, of being able to handle things. And it gets noticed, too, when you do a good job; I got a letter of commendation after I had to deal with a cord prolapse, saying that what I did was exemplary.

That kind of feedback encourages you to believe you can become even more competent. So it's really worth taking up the opportunities for self-development. And there's no problem finding the time, because there's a lot of flexibility in the working hours. There are loads of options - for instance, you can work a longer shift and fewer days a week, or do term-time working. It all goes towards the feeling of autonomy you get here. And, of course, it makes it very family-friendly.

Q+A

Where are the hospitals based?
Barts is close to the City of London, near St Paul's Cathedral and historic Smithfield Market. It's near Barbican, Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Paul's underground stations. About six buses stop outside or close to the hospital. Barts is in the congestion charge zone, so public transport is probably best, although you can get a discount on the charge if you live inside the zone.

The Royal London is in the East End, in Whitechapel, just across the road from Whitechapel underground station. Four buses stop right outside the hospital.

The London Chest Hospital is in Bethnal Green, about five minutes walk from Bethnal Green underground station, which is on the Central line. Eight buses stop close to the hospital.

These transport links are really comprehensive; they not only make your journey to and from work easy, they also give you great access to trips all over London.
Isn't it very expensive to go out to films and theatres in London?
Not with all the discounts we get! The Trust arranges lots of great deals - many prices are greatly reduced, and some shows and films are completely free.
Are there laundry facilities so I can have my uniform cleaned?
Yes - and it's free of charge!
